speed issues

I must say I'm quite impressed with vlc, Playback is totally reliable, and 
high quality, although it seems a bit slow... I have checked my DVD is using 
DMA, and I think I have XV extensions, but it seems to always use X11 output. 
I can't seem to get the other outputs to work. 

And I did have to use "--yuv yuv" to get video display.

MAndrake 8.0, celeron 500 at 563, 256mb ram, TNT2 ultra.
