vlc on an g400 tv out

Hi is anyone using vlc on the tv out option of a g400 tv.  I can 
get my desktop up on the tv fine, although the keyboard doesnt 
seem to work.

If i use the following 

vlc --vout x11 --displayay :0.1 dvd:/dev/dvd 

i just get a black screen on the tv.  this may be the back ground 
with no interface showing but i am unable to bring up the 
interface.  Since i can drag a screen over in xinerama mode 
surely it should work as a clone with the display :0.1 option.
