Trying to use vlc on os x

Hi,
I downloaded and have been trying to use vlc.  The program starts, but there
is no window for the DVD content with a DVD in the drive..... ³new viewer
window² under file in the menu  is greyed out, and I cant seem to get
anything going. None of the controls seem to do anything.....  Im running os
x on a g4 (pci graphics) with 2 ATI rage128 cards.
If there¹s something obvious here, let me know...
