vlc problems

Hi all,
Got a problem with vlc. I'm running the deb of 0.2.90-1, and I can start
the program, I can select the disk and it spins up, but when I click play,
the controller shows the progressbar, along with
DVD: Title: 1 Prev Next Chapter: 1 Prev Next
which disappears after a second. No screen ever comes up, and the movie
does not play. I have installed vlc, vlc-gtk, libdvdcss, libdvdcss-dev.
Note that I am running this on a 1GHz Athlon, kernel 2.4.9, and using
devfs. Since I have a DVD drive and a CD-RW drive, I have to use SCSI
emulation. So the device for the DVD is
/dev/scsi/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/cd. I tried setting this in preferences,
but it reverts back to /dev/dvd.
Another problem is that on my powermac G3 laptop, 0.2.83 works, though the
video is choppy. I compiled this one from source. I then installed the deb
of 0.2.90-1 on that machine and the picture is smooth as silk, but I have
no sound.
Can anyone suggest what I can do to get these running on 0.2.90?
Regards,
