vlc sound problem

As various users I have a problem with sound.
 
On my PC I have two Linux : one with kernel-2.2.13 and one with kernel-2.4.5
I have a sound blaster and use esd.
 
With kernel-2.2.13 I can play DVD with vlc-0.2.83, 0.2.90 and a recent cvs :
video and sounds are correct.

With kernel-2.4.5 I have only noises, but I have no problem with xine.

Is the sound problem in relation with the kernel version ?
