VLC on OS X 10.1

I had to reinstall os x 10.1 on my powerbook g4 400MHZ, 256MBRAM

before that, I had first installed 10.0.4, than the upgrade... this time I just
installed 10.1 directly...
AND I CAN'T FIND A CC COMPILER ANY MORE?!?
any ideas whats wrong now?
i realised this when I downloaded the 2.9 version of vlc, I tried ./configure
and it told me it can't find a compiler...

ps: the binary version is not running! No matter what commands I use, it starts,
but neither a display appears, nor starts the cd or dvd drive spinning...
