KDE 2.2-3 & sound

I've upgraded my kernel to 2.4.6-3 with built-in support for my AC97. I've 
also upgraded to KDE 2.2-3, QT 2.3 under X 4.0.3 with the Nvidia driver. Arts 
is handling sound. With vlc 0.2.83-1 I've video only - which, by the way, is 
very good. This is on a 900 T-bird with 512megs RAM.

I can remember seeing past posts about killing arts before running vlc, but 
KDE's in fairly wide use now & there's bound to be a better solution. Thanks 
for any assist.
