vlc segfaults immediately

When I open the /dev/dvd, I get an immediate segfault.

I installed 0.2.83 from the RPM.  I'm running RedHat 7.1
with the kernel upgraded to 2.4.3.  The system is
a dual Pentium III, and I'm using the SMP kernel.

The DVD I was trying to use was "The Matrix" (of course :-)

My DVD player is set to region 1.

What else do you need to know?
