Mac OS X MPEG-2 problem

OK so here is the situation:

I have vlc compiled and up and running.  I have a mpeg-2 file I want to 
play (a dark angel .m2v file to be exact) and the file will open in 
vlc.  It starts playing and I can hear the audio fine.  No skips or 
anything.  The problem is with the video.  It's like my screen won't 
refresh by itself.  If I drag a window over the player I can see one 
frame and by repeating I see another, but thats crazy.  How does one fix 
this?
