The command should be  
./configure --enable-mad --with-mad-tree=$path ......
and  there must be a mad.a file in the path.

tried it now with:
--------------------------------------------------------------

./configure --enable-mad --enable-ffmpeg 
--with-ffmpeg-tree=/packages/videolan/ffmpeg

---------------------------------------------------------------

No chance, same effect.

Any other ideas what is missing ?
