re sound

Thanks for the help.
I am now playing video but I have no sound.
 
The error is -  aout error: can't open sound esound socket (format
0x00001021 at 44100 Hz)
Ac3_adec error: could not initialize thread.
esd is running and I do get sound from my speakers. 
 
Dell inspiron 5000  sound card is ESS Technology IES1978 Maestro 2E
