I cannot get it to work :/

Hello, I am running a G4 400/OSX

I installed the vlc 2.92 program, hoping that it would be able to play 
SVCD's. I tested it with DVD's as well.. but it wouldn't recognize them 
either.

It says to compile it and stuff.. to tell you the truth I have no idea 
how to use terminal or anything :/ All I did was download the 
vlc.0.2.92-25.01.2001.dmg and then I used disk copy to uncompress the 
disc image.. and then I ran it directly from the disk image (it has a 
pylon icon). I tried to use open>file and selected the mpg on the SVCD 
and it did nothing at all.

I am just really in the need to use the SVCD/mpeg2 function on the 
program

please help, how do I set it up.. what am I doing wrong
