newbie: svcd mac os 10.1

I'm using mac os 10.1

I downloaded the vlc application and inserted a svcd.

I expected to open it with "open disc" but it is grayed out.
I tried opening the mpg2 file directly by "open file" but that didn't 
work either.

I tried doing a bit of research and there seems to be a lot of unix talk 
about attempting to open something directly using a (command line?)

I do not know how to do this and was hoping I could be provided with 
some instructions.
