VLC 0.2.92 fails where 0.2.90 succeeded

I just wiped my working version of VLC with the current non-working
version, sig.
The RPM version of vlc-0.2.92 just segfaults on starting up
(something about a bad sigkill instruction). So I locally compiled a
version and it fails in new and different ways. Whee.
The failure is that it just will not play DVDs, with the real kicker
being that it never even spins the DVD drive up.
This worked an hour ago and now I am hosed, sigh. Ah, I see that
the old versions are still in FTP, yea. I look forward to a better
working 0.2.93!
