Today I tried viewing a DVD and then 'sliding' the time back beyond the 
beginning of the current chapter. This made the audio go completely out 
of sync. It was so far out that I could not work out whether it was 
positive or negative, or by how many seconds.  However, using the 
'slider' on the gvlc interface to go forward a number of minutes was 
fine. But then, sliding it a little further produced nosound at all!


Incidentally, did you know that the ipv6 module fails to compile?

I had to delete it from Makefile.config to get vlc 0.4.2 to build. 
Probably not the right thing to do, but it worked for me.
