While it might be possible, I vote NO as loudly as possible.  Mangling
the Subject: line just makes a mess and it's a lousy way to sort.

Why not sort on the delivery header information like

  From vls-bounce at videolan.org Thu Jun 27 10:18:11 2002
  Return-Path: <vls-bounce at videolan.org>
  X-list: vls

or the attached footer (ugh) advertising the list or even 

  Reply-To: vls at videolan.org

since we've already messed that part up, too?  There's no need to make
things even worse...
