cannot connect to X server

Using vlc-snapshot-20020302 on SuSE Linux 2.4.4 compiled with defaults.  When 
I try to start with vlc dvd:/dev/dvd I get error 
Xlib: connection to ":0.0" refused by server
Xlib: Client not authorized to connect to server
:cannot connect to X server :).)

I ran with -vvvvvvvv and got several error messages like:
module warning: cannot find symbol InitModule__Module_0_2_92_dev_2002_03_06in 
module plugins/X11.so (vlc undefined symbol: _initModule . .. . 

also . . . . /fx_scope.so
             /null.so
             /dummy.so
            /lpcm_adec.so
        /usr/lib/videolan/vlc/gtk.so
I checked for the above files and they do exist.
What am I missing.
