problem compiling 040 for OSX

I am trying to install 040 from the tarball for optimum results but the
error i am getting after I type in ./configure is:-
configure error: The development package for SDL is not installed. please
install it and try again. Alternatively you can also configure with
--disable-sdl.

What is SDL & do I need it or am I best to install without it (If I need it
where do I get it)

Sorry if these seem stupid questions but I am new to the command line
