If you are new to command-line installs, just get the pre-built binary 
package from <http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download.html>

The version you want is this one: 
<http://www.videolan.org/pub/videolan/vlc/0.4.5/macosx/vlc-0.4.5a.dmg>

You shouldn't need to install libraries as they are only needed to 
build the application.
