problems with a DVD on Win XP

With vlc 0.4.4, the screen showed up and closed. No sound. With vlc 0.4.1, I sawed the screen but it was still and the audio sound wasn't continuous.
My system is windows xp home edition. CPU is Pentium III-M 1.13GHz with 512 RAM. The notebook uses Intel 830M graphic controller. Any solution?
