X-Vid Codec?

The VideoLAN Client uses ffmpeg's libavcodec library to decode MPEG4
streams. XVID should already work with it, which version of vlc are you
using (latest is 0.4.4) ? You could upload the beginning if the file (a
few seconds is enough) to ftp.videolan.org/incoming so somebody can have
a look at it.
