[vlc] VLC 0.5.3 on RH7 / gcc 2.96?

Hello, all ...

Has anyone tried building the latest VLC on RedHat 7, using gcc 2.96?  
I'm hesitant to install a later libc to get the binary-only rpm to 
install, so I thought I would try to build it from source and see if it 
goes.  So far, so good on Mac OSX 10.2.4, but I need to test it on 
RedHat 7 / intel as well ...
