[vlc] ffmpeg/v4l questions/broken ffmpeg?

I'm trying to figure out how to use the
ffmpeg and v4l modules with vlc, and I'm not
very clear on what they give me/how to
use them.

When I point vlc to /dev/video0, it doesn't
seem to understand the device. Though I'm
using v4l2, I think it should back off to
v4l1 mode if needed, maybe not.

Meanwhile, vlc is unable to play any
ffmpeg .vob/.mpg I create.

Have the 2 projects gone out of sync,
or am I messing up/confused somewhere?

[side question - will vls support v4l2 anytime
soon? Yes, I know, wrong list]
