[vlc] Using vlc in an SDL application

Hi all.

I want to write an SDL application in which I'll be displaying some
video.  I was wondering if vlc could be used in such a way, rather than
as a complete program.  I'd prefer to use vlc over, say, xine or
mplayer, as it seems to have better cross platform support (the two
platforms I'll be needing being Linux and Windows).  I'd also like to be
able to insert custom on-screen displays over the video as it's being
shown.

Is this possible?
