I have the same problem for installing the VLC on RH9 too. However, it got
resolved by downloading the missing one as "libasound.so.2", which I found
at rpmfind.net.

It means the optional components aren't that optional.

I too just installed Linux (Red Hat 9) on a computer for the first time and
ran into a lot of trouble trying to install VLC. The messages you got are
telling you that you don't have all of the necessary RPMs in the directory
that you are using to install. When I installed VLC the first time I ended
up screwing up Linux so that it would not install and had to reinstall Linux
to correct the situation.

I am brand new to linux, so I apologize in advance for
my ineptitude. I hope this question hasn't been
answered already elsewhere, but I am trying to install
vlc in RedHat 9 and when i give the rpm -U *.rpm
command as instructed I receive
warning: a52dec-0.7.4-fr3.i386.rpm: V3 DSA signature:

Thanks guys for the help
