vlc is designed to work with several interfaces. gui, commmand line and
all of that on several platforms.
Apperently you compiled/specified no gui interface and vlc falls back
to the command line/remote control interface.
you can now type h to get a list of commands you can use to control a
video, or if you want a gui, you should recompile with
--enable-wxwindows (you need to have wxwindows installed for this of
course) or --enable-gtk (the 2 preferred/working interfaces)
