Vlc tries to use XVideo with hardware accelaration, that means with 
support from your graphics chipset. If you see a half split screen, then 
that does not work alright.

Could you try to launch vlc with using sdl as video output and report on 
your findings?

vlc -V sdl -vvvvvvvv 2>log.txt
