First of  all, I believe  vls 0.5.0 has no  support fo v4l  devices. You
need  the  cvs version  for  that  (sorry,  I'm  afraid you'll  have  to
recompile a brand new vls ;-)

Considering the differnce between the  video and v4l inputs, well, video
is for cards with  a harware mpeg encoder (such as  the haupaugge PVR or
the kfir). v4l input is for card that only provide raw data as an output
(and then require software encoding)
