[vlc] vlc 0.5.2 vs ac52dec with --enable-djbfft

Back when I installed vlc 0.4.6, I compiled ac52dec with djbfft enabled - but when I try to use it with vlc 0.5.2, ./configure fails. 

After the message "checking for a52_free in -la52... no", vlc 0.5.2 generates the configure error "Could not find a52 on your system...". 
vlc 0.4.6 does not generate this error. 
If I recompile a52dec without enabling djbfft, then vlc will ./configure just fine.

Can anyone explain this? Why does vlc 0.5.2 generate an error here, when vlc 0.4.6 does not?
