Is the sound module loaded? Or with other words do you get sound from 
another applications (music, movie??).

If so, then try the command:
vlc -vvv --aout=oss --dspdev /dev/dsp

If that does not work then try:
vlc -vvv --aout=oss --dspdev /dev/dsp --oss-buggy

Normally /dev/dsp is the audio device.

hmm .. did you run /sbin/ldconfig as root?
