Ok so a sound daemon from Opie (?) is having the device. Maybe vlc 
cannot open it and does not fail properly enough.

Could you shutdown Opie GUI? and try from the commandline the following:

zaurus-vlc -vvv --qte-guiserver /var/a.mpeg

And send the log file ;-)

If vlc loads then I do not think this is still an issue.
