Nope. you should install wxGTK and use the wxWindows plugin of VLC.
that works under GNOME, GTK, KDE, Python if you want :)

You are using vlc-0.6.0
Better use vlc-0.6.2
USE="~x86" emerge wxGTK /usr/portage/media-video/vlc/vlc-0.6.2.ebuild
Also be sure to take a look at the USE variables the ebuild listens to
first. many componenets of VLC depend on other components and if you
don't specify the correct USE variables, you will miss a lot of
functionality.
