My own experience, using a VLC several version older than current...
A 466 MHz Celeron was marginal - 
64 Mb ram was too little, 96 Mb helped alot, 128 Mb seemed to get
past that bottleneck.
Your ram requirements will vary depending on what else might be
running on your machine.
All of the above on GNU/Linux-Kernel-2.4.x
