[vlc] made it past the pipe input, on to the next problem

Sorry to keep bothering the list. I found in the developer docs that using 
stdin with the - file input does the right thing.

It works and the feed starts displaying, but after a while (a few seconds 
to half a minute) it the run window starts spewing out
[00000175] main input error: failed allocating a new buffer (decoder stuck?)

and hangs.

any thoughts on how to proceed?
