VLC handles  mkv subtitles  quite well  (as well  as ogm  subtitles), in
opinion, as long as they are muxed in the stream. By this, we only meant
that you could only use the "subtitle"  box, and add a subtitle file "by
hand"  with avi  files (since  avi sux,  and has  no native  support for
subtitles)
