[vlc] crop

I run VLC 0.7.1a on MacOS X 10.3.3 (Build 7F44). I tried to use the 
cropping feature. I activated the auto-crop faeture in the settings 
(Modules -> video filter -> crop) to get rid of the black bars. I open 
a movie an the black bars where still there. I found no detailed 
information in the manula either.

What can I do?
