use vlc udp:@224.0.0.1 (or use the corresponding option in the gui).

BTW, using 224.0.0.1 as streaming address is a bad idea.

224.0.0.x and 224.0.1.x addresses are usually used for system purpose.

For instance, 224.0.0.1  is the address every  multicast capables device
on a network join at startup.
