[vlc] Audio filters

I have some video off archive.org - lots of interesting stuff they have 
there - but the audio is a little noisy or has a slight hiss or is 
simply very low in volume and a little "flat" sounding.

Aside from the equalizer in OS X, how can I improve this on the fly? 
There is a field in the Preferences of the OS X version for "audio 
filter" but it doesn't explain how to use it.

Suggestions/ideas anybody?
