Well, vlc uses  v4l to support webcams. Please check  your microphone is
plugged in the  appropriate plug of you soundcard,  the recording device
is set to  mic in your soundcard settings, and  recording audio level is
set correctly.

You also  need to  tell vlc  on which  device your  soundcard is.  It is
sometimes required to test  several samplerates, mono/stereo settings in
order capture to work.
