[vlc] vlc/X11 acts up if no window manager is loaded

SSIA -- try running vlc (current svn snapshot) without running a window 
manager.
The UI comes up nicely, but instead of the video, there's just a black frame.

--vout sdl works, --vout x11 and --vout xvideo don't.
