[vlc] Reading a file from stdin?

Hi,

This may be a very simple question but I tried to get 'vlc' to read a
file from STDIN and it didn't work.

I can play a local file if I do this on the command line:

vlc.exe file.mpg

This is on Windows, btw.

But if I do:

vlc.exe < file.mpg

or 

type file.mpg | vlc.exe

all I get is the 'vlc' screen and nothing else.


Am I missing something basic or doesn't vlc read from stdin?
