In my ~/vlc-0.7.1 directory:
./configure --enable-pp --with-ffmpeg-tree=../vlclib/ffmpeg-20040222

The PATH for 'with-ffmpeg-tree=..' is the directory where you unpacked
and built the ffmpeg-library
