I've found the reason: I didn't have cvs installed (but I must say that the error message was more of a red herring than really
helpful).
Unfortunately, now I get again the error I had in the first place, i.e.:
+ aclocal-1.7 -I m4
+ autoconf
' is already registered with AC_CONFIG_FILES.
autoconf/status.m4:848: AC_CONFIG_FILES is expanded from...
configure.ac:3814: the top level
autom4te: /usr/bin/m4 failed with exit status: 1
With the difference that it doesn't occur at the same place (your suggestions in the previous posts, Adrian, were maybe not
essential, since, or so I presume, the seemlingly missing packages were not really required, as otherwise the config script would
have stopped after detecting their non-existence, which it didn't; your help was and is appreciated anyway, of course!).
I'm just a bit surprised that nobody else except me runs into this problem. I have carefully followed all the instructions as to how
to configure and install VLC.
If somebody has an idea, please let me know. Thanks a lot.
