Some interesting replies so far. To throw another thought in, what about an xml-based streaming format that works something like jabber (www.jabber.org), where each item played is part of an ongoing well-formed xml document sent from server to client? Ok that's new development: is there really no way to do what i'm talking about with lossless audio in the current frameworks?
