Have you tried, perhaps, acodec=a52 for the audio coding?

Subject: [vlc] Transcode with 5.1 audio

Hi,
I've been trying to trancode a program while keeping the 5.1 channel
sound intact.

I've tried to do this by setting channels=6, (full command at bottom of
post) but I get the following error:
[00000233] stream_out_transcode private error: cannot create audio chain

when I play the resulting file in mplayer, I get Audio: no sound in the
output.

Does anyone know the correct setting for channels so I can keep the 5.1
audio?

Here is the full command I am using:

vlc "army-navy.ts" --program 2 --sout
'#transcode{vcodec=mpgv,vb=2048,scale=0.500,acodec=mpga,ab=384,channels=6}:s
tandard{access=file,mux=ps,url="army-navy5-1.mpg"}'

Thanks
Dave
