[vlc] Any sequences for VLC test?

Dear all,
    I'd like to test VLC various cabability about the video/audio
transcoding. Is VLC ftp/website containing any such data?
    Also, while using command-line, my VLC GUI window is just poped up
and does nothing. Is there anything wrong with my vlc? Thanks a lot!~
