I've had good experiences with x264 playing back QT encoded files. AFAIK x264 is more feature rich then Apple's implementation and at least on my Powerbook it's much faster.

Yes, it can, but don't expect the performance of Apple's QuickTime- 
codec. It is highly optimised, while H.264 support is still  
experimental in VLC (using the FFMPEG library). This means  
practically, that some parts of the H.264-specification are not  
supported yet and that you need a faster PC to get the same experience.
