Hello :)
thanks for your help. I tried both but no luck :''(

with -x11-display I get  "VLC media player 0.8.1 Janus" but nothing starts, 
with  -xvideo-display "VLC media player 0.8.1 Janus
vlc: unknown option `-x'
Try `vlc --help' for more information."

I also tried adding DISPLAY=:0.0 to the crontab and typing "xhost +" before 
using cron (I've read somewhere it may help). Still no results.

Oh in the previous post I did not say I am using a Slackware 10.1 with kernel 
2.6.10.
