Thanks for your quick answer :)

if I type
vlc --x11-display
I get this:

$ vlc --x11-display
VLC media player 0.8.1 Janus
vlc: unknown option `--x11-display'
Try `vlc --help' for more information.

while with -x11-display nothing  happens, no matter if I type xhost + or not
