Since then, I found out that the bug in is the Darwin Streaming Server - 
*not* in the LIVE.COM libraries or VLC client.  Therefore, the problem 
occurs only for streams served by Darwin Streaming Servers (and, of course, 
only when requesting RTP-over-TCP, not regular RTP-over-UDP).

I have reported this problem to Apple, but (based on Apple's poor history 
of fixing DSS/QuickTime bugs) am not confident that it will get fixed 
anytime soon.
